Manchester Manchester is a big place! Seven million others live in the urban area, making it the second-largest urban area in Britain after London. The area has been inhabited for nearly 2000 years, since the Roman commander Agricola built a wooden fort here in AD 70. The site of the fort is marked by today's Camp Street. In the 18th century, the town sprang into the forefront of world attention by being the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. Thanks to the infrastructure of a well-connected canal system, the coming of the railways, and later, the Manchester Ship Canal, Manchester was ideally placed to receive incoming raw materials of cotton from the USA. It also had the large workforce required to process the raw materials and the means of distribution for finished goods. The city became known locally as "Cottonopolis." Many of these warehouses still survive, but have been converted into hotels and flats. The first passenger railway in the world ran between Manchester and Liverpool. Sue took me to work with her. She works for www.thephone.coop. It is the only co-operative telephone company in the UK. Manchester is the home of the co-op movement, which was founded by the Rochdale Pioneers. The rattie mousepad was made by Julie at Acrorats. |

| During the summer, Manchester hosted the Cow Parade 2004. There were 150 cows in Manchester City Centre, making it the world's biggest art installation. Here I am with the 2 cows that the Manchester Science Park sponsored (that's where Sue's office is). Hope I don't get stepped on! |

| Manchester has the second-largest Chinese community in the UK after Liverpool. The council built an arch to commemorate it. Every year, there are firecrackers, parades, and dragons in the streets during the Chinese New Year celebration. |

We went to a bar called Cord, which is a favorite of Sue's. It's famous for having all the original fittings of the Hacienda Club.
Sue was one of the extras! The bar was instrumental in making
Manchester the heart of the UK music scene when Madonna played her
first gig in the UK here. Here I am relaxing in the coolest bar
in Manchester. I learned so much about Manchester that was fascinating! In 1996, the IRA set off a 3000lb bomb on a busy Saturday morning. The bomb destroyed the centre of Manchester and injured over 200 people. Sue's dad had to be evacuated and I'm told it was very scary. It gives me shivers just to think about it! Since then, the centre has been rebuilt and was completed in 2000. Due to this, it is called Millennium Quarter. |

As you can see behind me, Sue's ratties live in a lovely
big cage, but since I was a guest, I was allowed to sleep in the guest
bedroom. That's all from Manchester. |
